Credit cards with free checked bags

Answer first

A free checked bag card is only useful when the bag savings beat the card cost.

Alaska, Air Canada, American, United, Delta, and JetBlue cards in this guide publish checked-bag benefits. The practical question is narrower: will your airline, route, traveler count, reservation, and payment method qualify for the waiver, and will the avoided checked-bag fees outweigh the card's annual fee?

The cards covered here are not treated as general travel-card recommendations. They are included because their published baggage benefits can be tested against real checked-bag fees. In each case, the benefit is narrower than a blanket baggage waiver: route scope, traveler count, and booking conditions still control whether the free-bag line applies.

Cards that do not behave like a repeat checked-bag waiver are intentionally left out of the calculator even when they are useful for other reasons. The goal is to test baggage savings, not to rank every airline card.

Start with the checked-bag calculator if you do not know the cash baggage bill yet. Move to the card calculator only when checked-bag fees are a recurring cost worth testing against an annual fee.

Current airline coverage: Alaska, Air Canada, American, United, Delta, and JetBlue.

This page answers:
  • Which covered airline cards publish a checked-bag benefit?
  • How many travelers can be covered on one reservation?
  • Which route, booking, and payment rules can block the waiver?
Step 1

Price the bags

Estimate the checked-bag bill for your airline, traveler count, bags, and annual trip pattern.

Open baggage calculator
Step 2

Check the benefit rules

Confirm route scope, traveler coverage, same-reservation rules, and whether the ticket must be paid with the card.

Step 3

Run break-even math

Compare modeled checked-bag savings against the card's annual fee before counting points, credits, or perks.

Why a card is modeled here

The calculator is deliberately narrow. It only models card benefits that can be turned into checked-bag savings and compared against an annual fee. That keeps the recommendation useful for baggage decisions instead of drifting into a general credit-card ranking.

Reusable bag waiver

The published benefit has to remove a checked-bag fee on eligible trips, not just provide points, status progress, travel credits, or baggage-delay protection.

Clear traveler coverage

The card terms need to say who is covered: cardholder only, cardholder plus one companion, or cardholder plus a larger same-reservation party.

A usable annual fee

The calculator compares checked-bag savings against the card annual fee. Cards in another currency are better handled once the tool supports that currency cleanly.

Bag fees we can price

The break-even calculator needs a usable checked-bag fee for the airline and bag position. If the airline data is route-priced or currency-mismatched, the guide can verify the benefit while limiting the math.

Best use by airline

Start with the airline where you actually pay bag fees. Then use the card calculator only if the bag cost repeats enough for the annual fee to matter.

AirlineWhen it is worth checkingStart here
Alaska
Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines flights paid with an eligible Atmos card
Strong fit for repeat Alaska or Hawaiian flights when a first checked bag would otherwise be paid and the eligible Atmos card payment rule is satisfied.
Air Canada
Travel originating on an Air Canada flight
Useful as a verified Chase Aeroplan benefit reference; full break-even math is intentionally limited until CAD bag-fee support is modeled.
American
Domestic American Airlines itineraries
Best for domestic American itineraries where the first checked bag would otherwise be paid for several travelers or repeat trips.
United
United-operated flights
Best when United first- or second-bag fees repeat and the traveler can satisfy United's card-payment and MileagePlus-number conditions.
Delta
Delta and Delta Connection segments when checking in with Delta
Best when the reservation includes the eligible SkyMiles number and the traveler would otherwise pay first-bag fees, especially for groups.
JetBlue
Eligible JetBlue-operated flights purchased with a JetBlue Plus or Premier card
Best for JetBlue Plus or Premier cardholders buying eligible JetBlue-operated flights with the card; the no-fee JetBlue Card is intentionally excluded.

Cards intentionally not modeled here

Some airline cards have useful travel benefits but do not fit this site's recurring checked-bag waiver model. Those cards can still be worth considering; they just should not be treated as clean baggage-fee break-even inputs.

Citi / AAdvantage Globe Mastercard

Not modeled in the break-even calculator because the current official card page emphasizes lounge passes, earning, status-related benefits, and credits rather than a recurring checked-bag waiver like the Platinum Select card.

United Gateway Card

Not modeled as a repeat per-trip waiver because its checked-bag language is framed as earning two checked bags each year, not as a normal cardmember-plus-companion bag waiver on every eligible trip.

JetBlue Card

Not modeled because the no-annual-fee JetBlue Card does not publish a free checked bag benefit. The JetBlue Plus and Premier cards are the JetBlue cards that fit the baggage break-even model.

Canadian Aeroplan cards

TD, American Express, and CIBC Aeroplan cards can publish Air Canada bag benefits, but this calculator currently models USD annual fees. They should wait for CAD annual-fee support instead of being forced into a USD break-even table.

HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card

Not modeled as an Air Canada checked-bag card because its baggage value comes through earned Star Alliance status and extra allowance rules, not a simple recurring first-bag waiver tied directly to Air Canada card travel.

Chase Avios cards

Not modeled because the British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Iberia Chase Avios cards do not publish a recurring free checked bag waiver. Their baggage-related protections are delay or lost-luggage coverage, which is different from avoiding checked-bag fees.

No-annual-fee and points-only cards

Excluded unless the published benefit behaves like a reusable checked-bag waiver that can be compared against cash baggage fees.

Airline-by-airline checked bag benefit reference

The useful comparison is not just which card has a bag benefit. It is how many travelers the benefit covers, how many bags it removes, and how narrow the route or booking rules are.

When baggage benefits actually matter

Family travel

A waiver that extends to companions changes the math much faster than a solo-only benefit. That is why the traveler-count column matters more than the card's brand tier by itself.

Repeat bag patterns

These benefits are most relevant when the trip pattern regularly includes a first checked bag. They matter less when the traveler usually stays carry-on only or pays mostly second-bag and overweight charges instead.

Annual fee range

Current annual-fee ranges in this page run from $70-$395 on Alaska, $95 on Air Canada, $99-$595 on American, $150-$695 on United, $150-$650 on Delta, and $99-$499 on JetBlue.

To test a specific trip pattern instead of reading the benefit table by itself, use the card break-even calculator. It models checked-bag savings from the covered bag positions and excludes points, lounge access, credits, and bonuses.

Important restrictions

Alaska

  • Published free-bag language requires the flight to be paid for with the eligible card.
  • The benefit applies to the cardholder and up to 6 guests on the same reservation.
  • This is a first-checked-bag benefit, not an overweight or oversized waiver.

Air Canada

  • The Chase Aeroplan Card publishes first checked bag free up to 50 lb for the cardmember and up to 8 companions on the same reservation.
  • The benefit applies when travel originates on an Air Canada flight.
  • Air Canada baggage fees in this dataset are CAD-denominated, so the card is listed as a verified benefit while full break-even math waits for multi-currency support.
  • This is a first-checked-bag benefit, not an overweight, oversized, or second-bag waiver.

American

  • Benefit is tied to domestic American Airlines itineraries, not every partner or long-haul itinerary.
  • Companions must be on the same reservation as the eligible primary cardholder.
  • This is a standard first-bag benefit, not an overweight or oversized waiver.

United

  • United requires the primary cardmember's MileagePlus number on the reservation.
  • In this model, the ticket must be purchased with the eligible card for the bag benefit to apply.
  • The benefit applies to standard checked bags, not overweight or oversized bags.

Delta

  • Reservation must include the Basic Card Member's SkyMiles number.
  • This model does not require ticket payment with the Delta card; the key published condition is the eligible cardmember's SkyMiles number on the reservation.
  • Delta publishes first checked bag free on domestic and international Delta flights and second checked bag free on domestic Delta flights.
  • Codeshare flights and passengers already receiving a free checked bag through fare, status, or military eligibility are not covered by this benefit line.

JetBlue

  • JetBlue Plus and Premier publish first checked bag free for the cardholder and up to 3 companions on the same reservation.
  • This model treats the benefit as requiring the JetBlue flight to be purchased with the eligible card.
  • The no-annual-fee JetBlue Card is not modeled because it does not publish a free checked bag benefit.
  • This is a first-checked-bag benefit, not an overweight, oversized, or second-bag waiver.
