A free checked bag card is only useful when the bag savings beat the card cost.

The practical question is narrower: will your airline, route, traveler count, reservation, and payment method qualify for the waiver, and will the avoided checked-bag fees outweigh the card's annual fee?

The cards covered here are not treated as general travel-card recommendations. They are included because their published baggage benefits can be tested against real checked-bag fees. In each case, the benefit is narrower than a blanket baggage waiver: route scope, traveler count, and booking conditions still control whether the free-bag line applies.

Cards that do not behave like a repeat checked-bag waiver are intentionally left out of the calculator even when they are useful for other reasons. The goal is to test baggage savings, not to rank every airline card.

Why a card qualifies for comparison

The calculator is deliberately narrow. It only includes card benefits that can be turned into checked-bag savings and compared against an annual fee. That keeps the recommendation useful for baggage decisions instead of drifting into a general credit-card ranking.

Reusable bag waiver

The published benefit has to remove a checked-bag fee on eligible trips, not just provide points, status progress, travel credits, or baggage-delay protection.

Clear traveler coverage

The card terms need to say who is covered: cardholder only, cardholder plus one companion, or cardholder plus a larger same-reservation party.

A usable annual fee

The calculator compares checked-bag savings against the card annual fee. Cards in another currency are better handled once the tool supports that currency cleanly.

Benefits that do not erase a bag fee

A card can be useful without providing a recurring checked-bag waiver. These benefits are intentionally kept out of the bag-fee calculation so the result does not overstate savings.

Points, credits, and lounge access

These benefits may be valuable, but they do not erase a checked-bag charge and therefore should not be counted as baggage savings.

Baggage-delay or lost-luggage coverage

Insurance or reimbursement after a disruption is different from a fee waiver applied when the bag is checked.

Status pathways and one-time benefits

A status boost, annual certificate, or limited number of bag credits needs different math from a reusable waiver and is not treated as one here.

When baggage benefits actually matter

Family travel

A waiver that extends to companions changes the math much faster than a solo-only benefit. That is why the traveler-count column matters more than the card's brand tier by itself.

Repeat bag patterns

These benefits are most relevant when the trip pattern regularly includes a first checked bag. They matter less when the traveler usually stays carry-on only or pays mostly second-bag and overweight charges instead.

Annual fee range

Current annual-fee ranges in this page run from $70-$395 on Alaska, $95 on Air Canada, $99-$595 on American, $150-$695 on United, $150-$650 on Delta, and $99-$499 on JetBlue.

The Chase Aeroplan Card publishes first checked bag free up to 50 lb for the cardmember and up to 8 companions on the same reservation.
The benefit applies when travel originates on an Air Canada flight.
Air Canada baggage fees are CAD-denominated, so the card is listed as a verified benefit but the calculator does not make a USD break-even claim without currency conversion.
This is a first-checked-bag benefit, not an overweight, oversized, or second-bag waiver.

American

Benefit is tied to domestic American Airlines itineraries, not every partner or long-haul itinerary.
Companions must be on the same reservation as the eligible primary cardholder.
This is a standard first-bag benefit, not an overweight or oversized waiver.

United

United requires the primary cardmember's MileagePlus number on the reservation.
The ticket must be purchased with the eligible card for the bag benefit to apply.
The benefit applies to standard checked bags, not overweight or oversized bags.

Delta

Reservation must include the Basic Card Member's SkyMiles number.
The first-bag calculation uses the eligible cardmember's SkyMiles number and covers the cardmember plus up to 8 same-reservation companions.
The domestic second-bag waiver is narrower: it covers eligible Basic Card Members, not all companions. It is disclosed here but excluded from calculator savings.
Codeshare flights and passengers already receiving a free checked bag through fare, status, or military eligibility are not covered by this benefit line.

JetBlue

JetBlue Plus and Premier publish first checked bag free for the cardholder and up to 3 companions on the same reservation.
The JetBlue flight must be purchased with the eligible card for the benefit used here.
The no-annual-fee JetBlue Card is not included because it does not publish a free checked bag benefit.
