Air Canada baggage fees by fare and route
Air Canada does not have one universal baggage price. On current short-haul fares, Basic and Standard can charge CAD/USD 45 for the first bag; on current long-haul fares, Basic can charge CAD/USD 90 while Standard and Flex include the first bag. Check the route, fare, and ticket-purchase date before comparing fares.
Most Air Canada fares include one standard carry-on and one personal item. Some Economy Basic itineraries purchased on or after January 3, 2025 allow only one personal item; an onward international connection can change that allowance. Check the carry-on lookup for the exact ticket before bringing an overhead bag.
One personal item is included. On affected Economy Basic itineraries it may be the only included cabin item, so a backpack that exceeds Air Canada's 33 × 43 × 16 cm personal-item limit can create a gate-check problem.
For short-haul fares purchased on or after April 13, 2026, Basic and Standard charge CAD/USD 45 for the first bag and CAD/USD 60 for the second; Flex includes the first bag and charges CAD/USD 60 for the second. For listed long-haul fares purchased on or after May 14, 2026, Basic charges CAD/USD 90 then 120, while Standard and Flex include the first bag and charge CAD/USD 120 for the second. Taxes may apply.
Basic fares are the main restriction point: the checked bag fee can appear where higher fares include a bag, changes and refunds are not permitted after 24 hours except in qualifying circumstances, and advance seat selection starts as a paid product on Basic.
- Do not assume Standard always includes the first bag: on current short-haul fares, Basic and Standard both charge CAD/USD 45. Flex is the first of these three fare families with an included first bag.
- Use Air Canada's baggage calculator for the exact itinerary. The fee changes by route, fare, purchase date, and operating carrier, so a generic trip-cost calculator should not invent one universal total.
- Keep bags under Air Canada's standard weight and size limits; overweight and oversize charges move into route-based ranges and bags over 32 kg are not accepted as ordinary checked baggage.
- If an eligible Aeroplan card benefit applies, check in with Air Canada before security. It can cover the first bag for up to nine people on the same reservation, but it does not cover a bag first presented at the gate.
What will Air Canada charge for checked baggage?
Start with route group, fare, and purchase date. These are Air Canada's current published economy tiers; prices are per direction, shown in CAD or USD depending on departure market, and taxes may apply.
First check the cabin-bag trap
Economy Basic tickets purchased on or after January 3, 2025 include only one personal item on trips within Canada or between Canada and the U.S., Mexico, Central America, or the Caribbean. A qualifying onward international connection restores one standard carry-on. Air Canada says an unentitled bag handled at the gate can cost CA/US $65–$78 including tax.
Then identify whose rules apply
For a trip starting or ending in Canada or the U.S., Air Canada says the airline operating the first segment determines the baggage rules. On other international trips, the first carrier operating a flight between travel zones can control instead. Do this check before using the fee table.

Short-haul means travel within Canada; between Canada and the U.S.; or from Canada/U.S. to Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America. The listed long-haul group covers Canada/U.S. to Africa, Asia/South Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, or South America. Older tickets and other itineraries may use different rules.

Basic
On the current published tiers, Basic charges CAD/USD 45 for the first short-haul bag or CAD/USD 90 for the first listed long-haul bag. Some Basic itineraries also limit the included cabin allowance to one personal item. This is the fare family where both checked- and carry-on rules need an itinerary-specific check.
Standard and Flex
Standard does not universally include the first bag: it pays CAD/USD 45 on the current short-haul tier but includes the first bag on the listed long-haul tier. Flex includes the first bag in both published groups. Higher cabins and fares can have different allowances.
Preferred and extra-legroom seating
Preferred or extra-legroom seats are listed separately with a CAD 25 to CAD 199 range depending on route and timing.
International route differences
Air Canada's listed long-haul tier covers Canada or the U.S. to Africa, Asia/South Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Other itineraries, codeshares, and tickets issued before the effective dates can produce a different answer, so the booking confirmation remains controlling.
When fees may not apply
- The published 2026 amounts apply only to the listed route groups and tickets purchased on or after their effective dates.
- Codeshare and interline itineraries can follow the first operating carrier's baggage rules rather than the Air Canada baseline.
- A stopover longer than 24 hours can cause baggage fees to be assessed again.
- No change fee is shown for Standard and higher fares before departure, though fare difference can still apply.
- An eligible Aeroplan card's first-bag benefit applies at Air Canada check-in and does not add another free bag when the ticket already includes the first one.
